“DON SEGUNDO SOMBRA”: The
novel written by Ricardo Güiraldes.
The story of this novel is so universal and at the same time,
it is so localized in these places of the grassland and its
landscapes. This is linked with the Ricardo Güiraldes’
stays on the estancia (a ranch) “La Porteña”,
estancia belonged to his father that is located around ten
kilometers from the town. His stories in this place have an
autobiographic character in one of his books: “Gaucho”,
stories that advance the novel character which would be known
around the world, becoming a classic of the Spanish literature,
translated into thirty languages and dialects. It deals with
a trip with teachings taken from the rural man’s life.
Without being mentioned in the novel, San Antonio de Areco
is part of the Ricardo Güiraldes’ story. The Puente
Viejo (Old Bridge), and the Pulpería (a famous 19th
century traditional bar where men gathered for cards and a
little gambling) “La Blanqueada” are an example
of it.
