Population
According to the 2001 demographic statistics,
the district population is of 21.501 inhabitants. |

Geography
San Antonio de Areco is located in the
called subregion of the humid pampa (pampa húmeda).
This territory is an area fit for the agricultural and livestock
works whatever its types. Topographically, this area is a
large grassland with low scrubs carved by the Areco River
and some little waterways. |

Weather
The climate is considered humid and template

Economic Activity
The 70% of the district surface is assigned
to the farming production. At the same time, more than the
70% of the surface has an agricultural use because of the
fitness of its grounds for this activity and the profitability
of the cultivation.
The remanding percentage of the land is used for the livestock
activity. The overriding cultivations are soy, corn, wheat,
sunflower, sorghum, oat and grasslands.
Other important activities are the pure-blooded horses breeding,
the poultry keeping, the apiculture and the rabbit breeding.
On regards to the commerce, the local needs are fully satisfied,
prevailing businesses that deal with foodstuff, fuel, construction
material, automobile industry, transport, home devices,
agricultural machines, standing out the craftsmanship such
as made of silver, asta (horn of an animal), iron, pottery,
chocolate, furniture, country clothes, etc.

ADVICE
Visit Date
You will be able to visit San Antonio de Areco in any season
of the year and you will meet several attractions.
We recommend you to visit the Pagos de Areco (Areco Land)
in November. During this month, the city celebrates the
Tradition Day (a popular and typical festivity) and different
events and activities are prepared.
Timetable
If you make the return trip to Buenos Aires, the Federal
Capital city, please remember that you can find traffic
jams from 18.00 to 21.30 hours on your way to such city.

Entry requirements
For the majority of foreign nationals
who travel to Argentina for vacation, entry is straightforward
and hassle-free. All visitors to Argentina must be in possession
of a valid passport, but for many countries, visas are not
required. For the latest visa requirements, contact your nearest
Argentinian embassy or mission. |

Facilities
San Antonio de Areco has transport infrastructure,
telecommunications, banking, medical and tourism facilities. |

Electricity
The electricity supply is 220. Most plugs
have 3-pin or 2-pin. Adaptors can be purchased, but may be
in short supply. |

Driving
Non-residents are permitted to drive with
a driving licence issued and valid in their own country. If
your drivers licence does not meet these requirements, an
international driver’s licence is required. Driving
is on the right and the wearing of seatbelts is compulsory.
In some rural areas, there may be stray animals on the road
- which can prove dangerous at night when visibility is limited. |

People & language
Diverse people and cultures combine to
make the Areco´s population. The majority religion is
Christian, but freedom of worship is guaranteed by the Constitution.
The official language is Spanish. Some Arequeros are bi-lingual
and they speak English. |

Health
San Antonio de Areco has a public hospital
which offers an excellent medical service. But make sure you
have adequate health insurance for private consult. |

Safety
San Antonio de Areco is a safe place to
visit, provided they take basic common-sense precautions e.g.
not walking alone in deserted areas at night, not flashing
photographic equipment or jewellery and, in traffic, maintaining
a safe following distance. |

Shopping
Shops and arts & crafts shops, flea
markets and informal vendors provide a wide variety of goods,
curios, and shopping experiences. The main crafts are silverwork,
pottery, leather work and native knitted fabric. Most major
shops operate from Monday to Saturday from 8 AM to 12 AM and
from 3 PM to 20 PM. |

Tipping
Most restaurants do not add a service
charge to bills - thus it is customary to leave a 10% tip.
Parking and petrol station attendants should be given whatever
small change you have available. This is always appreciated,
even though it may seem a small amount. |

Money
The local currency is the Peso Argentino
($), which exchanges favourably with the major international
currencies. This makes San Antonio de Areco an affordable
destination.
Most major international credit cards such as American Express,
Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted.
However, it is advised that you bring them in a hard currency.
Currency can be exchanged at banks, forex bureaus and sometimes
at hotels. Foreign tourists can have their IVA (value-added
tax at 21%) refunded at the point of departure, provided they
present their original tax invoices where it says TAX FREE. |

Tax
Value-added-tax (IVA) is charged on most
items. It represents the 21% of the purchase and it´s
included in the final price.

Food & water
Areco´s tap water is potable. In
hotels, restaurants and nightspots, the standards of hygiene
and food preparation is generally top-notch. It is safe to
eat fresh fruit and salads and to put as much ice as you like
in your drinks. Restaurants cover a wide variety of cuisines
and visitors are normally very impressed with the food. The
regional food are: asados (meat), empanadas, locro, puchero,
pastels, arroz con leche, dulce de leche, de zapallo y de
batata. |

Clothing
The seasons in the Southern Hemisphere
are directly opposite to those of the Northern Hemisphere.
For summer months, lightweight (cottons and linens), short-sleeved
clothes are best, although a light jersey/jumper might be
needed for the cooler evenings. Warmer clothes are needed
for the winter months. |
